The community-based centre, Arden Chillout, was set-up in 2005/6, when the makeover kings Colin and Justin tackled the rundown Glasgow housing estate of Arden for their Channel 5 show 'Colin and Justin on the estate'.
Originally based in a Portakabin purchased with Fair Share Lottery Funding and a Star Studded Charity Fundraising event, Arden Chillout has gone from strength to strength in recent years, building a reputation for volunteering, youth work, employment and community engagement which has encouraged the creation of similar groups in local schemes.
And now, increasing popularity and demand for the Centre has led to a move to larger premises in an ex-council nursery annex on Kilmuir Road.
One half of the popular televsion duo, Colin McAllister, said: “When Justin and I were working in Arden, we met a lot of great people who were are really community-minded and we’re glad that we’ve given them that push to continue improving their area. The Chillout has been a success, not because of Justin and I, but because of the people that live here. The kids in the area were desperate to have The Chillout and what’s good is that they really value it too. It’s great to see how the centre has empowered the young people.”
Arden Chillout is a Registered Scottish Charity, a Registered Company limited by gaurantee and a Social Enterprise. It is funded with a mixture of grants, donations and income from fundraising events and our famous Tuck Shop. The Organisation is run by a Board of Directors which is made up of local volunteer parents.
Glen Oaks Housing Association (which was the umbrella company when the group first started) handed over full control of the Organisation to the Board in September 2008.
Throughout the years it has operated Arden Chillout has worked with over 300 children and young people and their families, given over 30 people the opportunity to Volunteer and provided paid employment or work placement for 20 young people and 4 Adults through grant funding.
